CONTEMPORARY IMPROVISATION exhibition presented by Gdynia Design Centre on behalf of the City of Gdynia aims to showcase the creative potential of Pomeranian designers and producers. It shows how Pomeranian creators design, how they improvise, how they prepare mock-ups and models – all this through simple use of craftsman methods and basic tools. The exhibition will be seen in three scenes: at DMY in Berlin, in Terminal Design in Gdynia Design Days 2013, and the fall in Lodz Design Festival 2013.
TABANDA group, the curators of the exhibition, focus on the product from a perspective of a creation process. They help to discover the drive for what becomes a concept between an initial thought and a prototype. They try to find out how a designer achieved the final form of a chair he created, which paths he has chosen and which has he dropped, whether he came across anything surprising along this process. They observe how a musician comes across the first notes of a melody, to what extent is it improvisation and to what is it an thought through preparation. They peep in how an animator creates his character, giving it a personality and then bringing it to life. They also peep in to a hen house and exactly scrutinize how we get free-range eggs, and what conditions we have to meet to achieve a perfect combination of form and taste.
The core aim is to show what is hidden behind closed doors of a workshop, atelier or studio – to show that the final product derives from dirt and sawdust of prototypes left in dark corners of a workshop. All this to draw out a unique product character and its one-off individuality when reaching the final stage of creation.
The exhibition „Contemporary Improvisation” that group Tabanda presented at DMY International Design Festival Berlin 2013 was awarded Pappel Design Preis 2013. Tabanda Group was awarded as one of the three exhibition presenting the most forward-looking products and courageous and inspiring ideas.
